Set in 1934, Eva Green plays Miss G, an enigmatic swimming instructor at an English boarding school. Despite the interesting story itself, about young girls’ obsession to their free spirited and adventurous teacher who later draw her attention more to the new student from Spain, which caused jealousy and hatred, this movie has quite an amazing costumes. Especially for the character of Miss G, with her cigarettes and silk pants, she’s the embodiment of cool sensuality. Her dark and quirky attitude portrayed so well trough the really diverse and exotic wardrobe in the movie.

Fashion in 1930 was about romance, femininity and sensuality, although expressed in a more mature manner than the Roaring Twenties. Nipped waistlines, sweeping skirts and detail were the order of the day. Two piece suits became much more practical for women in the 1930s because of their versatility and durability. They took inspiration from men’s suits but gave them feminine touches like bright colored lining and figure flattering shapes.

One of the fashion innovations of the 1930s was women’s use of the pants suit, also known as the slacks suit. Like many of the popular fashions of the 1930s, the pants suit was associated with a Hollywood starlet, actress Marlene Dietrich (c. 1901–1992) wore men’s clothes in many of her movies, but she was especially known for wearing masculine suits in her public appearances. Women’s pants suits generally had flared or bell-bottomed trousers, and the jackets were tailored in slightly softer versions of men’s styles

Cracks’ costume designer, Allison Byrne, worked hard so that the outfits the teacher wore would reflect her personality. She went back to catalogues and archives of photographs from 1930’s England to understand the style of the period. Byrne wants Miss G’s character to be very avant garde and theatrical, but believable in terms of her look being entirely self generated.

Miss G’s character is very alluring and dramatic in the beginning – a total 30’s “sex siren” – and it is only as the film develops that the darkness and unreality of her internal life begins to show. Allison Byrne has successfully revealed the theatricality and eventually the darkness without pushing the costumes so far that they overtake what Eva was doing on screen.

Edith Head was a fashion legend in her own time. She is probably the most famous costume designer in Hollywood history. She was mostly famous for her work on costumes for movies. she became head of the costume department at Paramount. Edith’s career was more than 60 years long. In that time she earned 8 Oscars and 35 Oscar nominations. According to her page on imdb.com, Edith Head was the Costume Designer on 421 films. She is responsible for the clothing in Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief and Vertigo; as well as Funny Face (starring Audrey Hepburn) and many Elvis movies.

Over the years, she worked her magic on such stars as Clara Bow, Mae West, Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck, Ann Sheridan, Veronica Lake, Olivia de Haviland, Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly, and Elizabeth Taylor. She had a keen knack for visually transforming these actresses into whatever screen guise was required, whether in a period drama such as The Heiress, for which she won her first Academy Award, or an adventure film such as To Catch a Thief. “There isn’t anyone I can’t make over,” she pronounced.

The examples I’ve chosen all show Edith Head’s respect for the simple – there are no big ruffles, poufs, or prints. This is also a sign of the times (the style at the time these movies were made). Nevertheless, Edith Head’s choices prove to be timeless – they would look good today. My favorite Edith Head’s quote is “Your dresses should be tight enough to show you’re a woman and loose enough to show you’re a lady.”

I gotta tell you that I’m a die-hard Gleek! Wednesday night is a sacred time for me when no one could touch the remote but me, and I still would buy the DVD box set so I could re-watch the episodes. Although the main attraction of the series are, of course, the musical part where the everyone sing and dance but I can’t help not to notice the stylish ensembles the characters gleefully wear in every episode.

The show’s heroine, Rachel Berry,  favors plaid skirts, knee socks, argyle vests and colorful cardigans, which reflect her upbeat -yet often annoyingly uptight – personality. I know that the costume designer was inspired by homeschool looking Tracy Flick from “The Election” character.

The germophobe counseling teacher, Emma, always looks ladylike and proper. Because of her OCD habits, everything’s perfectly tailored, perfectly fit, put together very prim and proper. The always impeccably dressed Ms. Pillsbury and loves bright cardigans, Peter Pan collars and shirts buttoned almost all the way to the top. I personally love Emma’s slightly retro style and would start to look for those cardigan chains in every vintage store I know.

The unapologetically intense coach of McKinley High’s award-winning cheerleading squad has never met a tracksuit she didn’t like – she seems to own one in every color, and accessorizes with her ever-present megaphone. I like how no matter mean she is with everyone, she could still don pink!

The glee club kids wear matching outfits whenever they perform their amazing numbers, from blue and black outfits to the lovely gold and black ensemble they wore to the regionals. The performance costumes are always neat, youthful and thematic, a typical show choir costume…

… but they can also rock in crazy costumes! Like ones in the Gaga episode, each girls (and Kurt) wear one of Lady Gaga’s infamously outrageous outfits. My favorite is Quinn’s pink dress with those wacky eyelashes and hand props, and oh how can I forget those lobster on Britanny. For this episode, Kurt has to wear a claw-like high heels shoes and the wardrobe department had custom made it to fit his boy size.

It is the work of Lou Eyrich who dresses the character in a diverse and unique outfits for each and every character. For the jocks and Puck, she would shop at Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, Gap, Target and sports stores. For Emma, they go Anthropologie and J. Crew and then add necklaces and bracelets. Rachel wears clothes from J.C. Penney, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Target and J. Crew. They mix it up and pair it with a penny loafer, bright knee-high from Target, a way-too-short skirt from Forever 21 and a knit cardigan from a thrift store. And for all the hard work, she just won the Costume Designers Guild award for Outstanding Contemporary Television Series. Well done, Ms. Eyrich!

On August 2009, I was assigned to be the head of wardrobe and make-up department for ‘Aladdin The Super Musical’ play. It was my first time of doing a costume designing project but i was so excited back then, i started to do a research about the arabian night theme costumes right away! After researching a lot about harem pants, fez and the structure of a flying carpet, i drew sketches of the costumes so i could look for specific fabric and tell the tailor what I really have in mind

Since the songs that were going to be sung by the actors were the same songs from the Disney’s Aladdin movie, so I tried to incorporate the costumes to the ones that in the cartoon and because there were a lot of singing and dancing involved so I had to really think about the comfiness of the costumes, because the last thing I want is Prince Ali to rip his pants while singing ‘A Whole New World’ .

Me and my team worked so hard to realize these ideas due to limited budget, limited time and the large number of casts. But after a long process of measuring, shopping, renting, fitting and all, we actually made it and all the casts looked amazing onstage.
